Pediatric surgeons from Pediatric Surgical Associates (Minneapolis) are an integral part of the Level I Pediatric Trauma Center. One pediatric surgeon is assigned to primary call, and one to backup 24/7. Current coverage can be determined by referring to Amion.

The on call pediatric surgeon should be notified of any pediatric trauma admission. The pediatric surgeon should be paged immediately and operative planning discussed if a child has injuries that require immediate surgery. The pediatric surgeons have right of first refusal for the case. The pediatric surgeon should be paged promptly with information regarding a child with injuries that may demand their presence in the near future (e.g. high-grade solid organ injury). Communication regarding children with only injuries that are managed other specialties can take place the following morning.

A pediatric surgeon usually rounds on pediatric patients on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The pediatric trauma medical director will conduct Pediatric M&M on the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 am.
